ABSTRACT
In this talk I will explain how and why there is a discrepancy between the code being developed by scientists and by software developers. I will take you on a journey of how we bridged some of these differences in a project that I have been working on. In particular I will introduce the python framework mlflow and explain how this is a useful and easy to use tool for managing the lifecycle of machine learning code. […]

00:00 The definition of SEO. The definition of SEO has changed out of all recognition since I started back in 1998, and that was the last century, which makes me feel kind of old. Here’s a very short, slightly cheeky definition of SEO, circa 1998 when I started optimizing my first website for Google. Trick the system using simple, short term tactics to get to the top and get the clicks.
00:29 Today, SEO is much more subtle and much more in line with an approach to satisfying the client, which is something that any market will recognize. So what is SEO today? SEO is the art and science of persuading search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo to recommend your content to their users as the best solution to their problem.
00:55 To win the SEO game, you need to work to do three things. Number one, ensure these search engines understand who you are and what you are for. Number two, convince them that you are the most credible options for their users. Number three, make your content deliverable.
01:12 Now, how high in the rankings and how often you appear is merit-based. These engines will show them the results that they consider to be the best fit for their users every time. Please read the article to learn more about SEO.

Differences Between US and International SEO: Interview With Andre Alpar

Thanks to our Pubcon 2013 SEJ Lounge sponsor, Paygrip!

As part of our SEJ interview series, Andre Alpar of AKM3 discusses the the differences between US and international SEO.

Here are some key takeaways from the video:

– Andre says that a lot of the latest phenomenons you hear about at US conferences are non-existent in European countries.
– In smaller European countries businesses rely on more direct communication with their customers. With SEO there’s a lot more direct outreach, Andre says.
– Smaller international countries aren’t avid users of sites like Reddit and StumbleUpon, but do commonly use Facebook and Twitter.
– Publishing content and waiting for the traffic to come in doesn’t work internationally. Andre says content marketers have to work a lot harder to get their content seen by large audiences.
– Building your own equity, such as a large e-mail list, is paramount in smaller countries. Going out and making direct connections is something you also have to do a lot of, as well as building up large followings on Facebook and Twitter.
– Link building is a lot easier in the US, Andre even goes as far as to call it “surreal” and a “dream land.”
– As audiences vary greatly in European countries, Andre says you really have to adapt your strategy to each of these audiences. There’s no one-size-fits-all SEO or social media strategy in Europe.
